Hi,

It is highly possible that you the issue that you are encountering is related to your codecs. Ensure that you have the proper codecs to play your videos and audio files.

· Try running the Microsoft FixIt tool for codecs .

· Media info will be able to identify the codec required for your audio and video files, and will provide a link to the website for the required codec . You can get it here .

Note: If can't find the codec you need you may convert the video to a supported format (eg. wmv) and then add it to your Windows Movie Maker project.

As noted by Litton, if you are unable to find the right codec to allow editing in Movie Maker, and don't want to rerecord as noted by Eacan98, you could do a conversion of the captured footage to a known file type.

I've used Freemake Video Converter (freemake.com) to turn problem files into .wmv format and that has made them work well in Movie Maker. As with any freeware, pay attention to what it offers to install and be ready to uncheck add-on items.

Would it seriously degrade the video quality of you convert AVI to WMV?  If not, what settings should be used to obtain the highest possible video quality?  I'm talking about video size (640 x 480), FPS and bitrate.  I assume the size and FPS should be the same as in the original, but what about the bitrate?

I would recommend you to convert to H.264 codec.

If you want to obtain the highest possible video quality, just make sure the video resolution, FPS and bitrate are same as source file.

These bitrate are for reference only:

For 720p, 3500kbps and above

For 1080p, 7000kbps and above

640x480? (Why use such a small resolution?)

2000kbps should be fine.

And make sure you're using and updated to the latest version of Movie Maker.

movie maker 11/12 fix, FILTERS.XML

edit (C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\Shared\FILTERS.XML)

add
system32 line <File>%windir%\system32\frapsvid.dll</File>

add
syswow64 line <File>%windir%\Syswow64\frapsvid.dll</File>

save (make sure you keep the file type/extension the same, don't turn it into a txt or rtf by accident)
i recommend notepad++ for editing filters.xml properly, without any snags, when saving.

don't forget to put your frapsvid.dll in both
C:\windows\system32\ and C:\windows\syswow64\

fraps is both 32 and 64 bit, and detects which mode it will run depending on the windows running.

DONE...GAME OVER, A DIPLOMA-LESS IDIOT FIXED THE PROBLEM.

You can always convert the footage to a compatible format afterwards if you can't capture in a supported format. I've used Freemake Video Converter for tasks like this. The critical thing, if you do choose to install Freemake is to choose a custom install and also uncheck any add-ons it wants to install. Just install the program and you should be able to convert from whatever to a high-bitrate .mp4 or .wmv file.
